What is GEAR?

GEAR is a community partnership between Gainesville Independent School District and local businesses. The program is designed to help students “Gain Education and Access Results” in order to become college and career ready after high school. The program was developed in 2015 by Select Energy Services and GISD.

GEAR gives students access to high quality, hands on business training in a variety of disciplines, including accounting, human resources, operations, IT, marketing, healthcare, administrative, and industrial disciplines. GEAR also provides students the opportunity to earn scholarship money to pursue higher education.

MENTOR DISCIPLINES

Accounting

Students learn

  • Staff accountant shadowing
  • Basic accounting terminology & principles
  • Apply solutions to accounting problems
  • Learn the “whys” of the accounting process
  • Learn to navigate accounting software (journal entries, charts of accounts, etc.)
  • Clerical duties: AP processing, paperwork, customer invoicing

Human Resources

Students learn

  • Learn the various Benefits programs in place at Select Energy Services
  • Assist with development and implementation of workplace wellness initiatives
  • Learn about employee solutions and problem solving

Operations Management

Students learn

  • Business Unit VP shadowing
  • Solving customer issues
  • Learn the various equipment used in the oil and gas industry
  • Learn the factors that drive business decisions (overall market, margins, etc.)

Information Technology

Students learn

  • Learn employee solutions and Helpdesk functions
  • Issuing phones, computers, and tablets
  • Implementing technology programs to enhance business functions (SharePoint, NAV, etc.)

Administrative

Students learn

  • Learn about the software used to make the company successful
  • Assist with Accounts Payable entries
  • Assist with answering telephones

COMPENSATION & SCHOLARSHIP

Each student earns an hourly wage while working with the company. In addition to this hourly wage, each student will receive money towards their scholarship fund for each hour worked. Upon successful completion of the semester, students have the opportunity to earn a bonus towards their scholarship fund.
