What is GEAR?

GEAR is a community partnership between Gainesville Independent School District and local businesses. The program is designed to help students “Gain Education and Access Results” in order to become college and career ready after high school. The program was developed in 2015 by Select Energy Services and GISD.

GEAR gives students access to high quality, hands on business training in a variety of disciplines, including accounting, human resources, operations, IT, marketing, healthcare, administrative, and industrial disciplines. GEAR also provides students the opportunity to earn scholarship money to pursue higher education.

Accounting

Students Learn

  • Staff accountant shadowing
  • Basic accounting terminology & principles
  • Apply solutions to accounting problems
  • Learn the “whys” of the accounting process
  • Learn to navigate accounting software (journal entries, charts of accounts, etc.)
  • Clerical duties: AP processing, paperwork, customer invoicing

Job Requirements

  • Grade of ‘B’ or above in Math
  • Detail oriented
  • Familiarity with Excel
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Able to write and communicate clearly and pleasantly

Human Resources

Students Learn

  • Learn the various Benefits programs in place at Select Energy Services
  • Assist with development and implementation of workplace wellness initiatives
  • Learn about employee solutions and problem solving

Job Requirements

  • Computer skills (Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • An average of ‘B’ or above in English/Language Arts

Operations Management

Students Learn

  • Business Unit VP shadowing
  • Solving customer issues
  • Learn the various equipment used in the oil and gas industry
  • Learn the factors that drive business decisions (overall market, margins, etc.)

Job Requirements

  • Must possess excellent communication skills and work well with others
  • Ability to complete tasks/assignments above the standard
  • Skilled in problem solving
  • Computer skills recommended
  • GPA requirements: Overall ‘B’ average to qualify

Information Technology

Students Learn

  • Learn employee solutions and Helpdesk functions
  • Issuing phones, computers, and tablets
  • Implementing technology programs to enhance business functions (SharePoint, NAV, etc.)

Healthcare

Students Learn

  • Learn all opportunities of a nursing degree
  • Shadow in all of the medical service lines offered at NTMC including the emergency department, surgery, medical floor, therapy department and medical imaging
  • Education opportunities at the hospital
  • The importance of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • An overall experience of how the hospital and departments within the hospital work together for the best patient experience

Welding

Students Learn

  • What it’s like to work in a shop environment as a welder
  • The importance of communication to your supervisor
  • Shop safety practices
  • How to read blueprints
  • How to clean and prep material prior to welding
  • Quality requirements and expectations for being an ASME code welder
  • How to pass ASME code weld test

Job Requirements

  • Strong work ethic
  • Detail oriented
  • Able to read and follow blueprints
  • General knowledge of using measuring devices (tape measure, levels, squares, etc.)

Warehouse

Students Learn

  • Learn about assessing and resolving material issues

  • Able to lift 50 lbs.

COMPENSATION & SCHOLARSHIP

Each student earns an hourly wage while working with one of the GEAR Partner Companies. In addition to this hourly wage, each student will receive money towards their scholarship fund for each hour worked. Upon successful completion of the semester, students have the opportunity to earn a bonus towards their scholarship fund.
